WHY DID SUTD AND SMU LAUNCH THIS DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
SUTD and SMU created the DDP in anticipation of the changing needs of industry. Growth sectors in Singapore’s economy include financial technology, technology services, transportation systems, infocomm, bio-medical, automation and more. Given the increasing demand for sustainable design in products as well as systems and services, DDP graduates will be equipped with a strong foundation in technology and design as well as be knowledgeable in business and management practices in order to move seamlessly between the worlds of business and technology and design.
WHO CAN APPLY FOR THIS DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
We are inviting high-achieving students who have a strong interest in one of the following engineering pillars as well as in business management to apply for this programme which is currently open to Singapore Citizens only:
Engineering Product Development (EPD)
Engineering Systems and Design (ESD)
Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD)
WHY IS THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME NOT OPEN TO ARCHITECTURAL & SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (ASD) STUDENTS?
The DDP programme invites students with a strong interest in EPD, ESD or ISTD to apply because most ASD students will pursue a Master of Architecture degree after their bachelor’s programme.
WHEN WAS THE FIRST INTAKE?
The first intake of students was in May 2014.
HOW MANY STUDENTS WILL BE ENROLLED IN EACH COHORT?
Due to the demanding nature of this programme, the intake is limited to 45 students per cohort.
WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
The duration of the programme is 4.5 years spread over 12 terms. Each new cohort begins the programme in May of every year.
WHERE CAN I FIND DETAILS OF THE CURRICULUM FOR THIS DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
WHAT IS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COURSES IN THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
The total number of courses students takes ranges from 49 to 52, depending on which pillar they enroll in and is also subject to curriculum changes for each new intake for either university.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE TWO 8-TERM PROGRAMMES CAN BE CONDENSED INTO 12 TERMS?
SMU and SUTD have mutually identified and recognized up to 14 courses that are offered by both institutions. DDP students only need to complete these 14 courses once to fulfil the curriculum credit requirements.
I UNDERSTAND THAT AN INTERNSHIP IS COMPULSORY IN SUTD AND SMU AND COMMUNITY SERVICE IS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT IN SMU. AS A DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME STUDENT, DO I HAVE TO DO BOTH?
Dual degree students will need to undertake an internship (either through SMU’s or SUTD’s career services offices or students may self-propose) as well as fulfill at least 80 hours of community service.
WHAT ARE THE GLOBAL EXPOSURE OPPORTUNITIES THAT DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME STUDENTS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO?
Students will be given opportunities to gain global exposure via an internship, a community service or a business study mission.
WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
Applicants are required to be academically strong, have a high capacity for multi-tasking, possess a passion for design, technology and management, and be willing to engage in an interactive pedagogy. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed holistically and will be invited for a joint interview.
WHAT DOCUMENTS DO STUDENTS WITH INTERNATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS NEED TO SUBMIT?
Singapore Citizens applying with International Qualifications (except IB Diploma) are required to submit one of the following:
SAT: A minimum total score of 1,900 (current SAT format), with at least 600 each for both critical reading and writing
ACT: A minimum composite score of 29, with at least a 27 each for both reading and writing
IELTS: A minimum overall score of 7.0 with a reading score of at least 7.0 and a writing score of at least 6.5
TOEFL iBT (internet-based test): A minimum score of 93, with at least a 22 each for both reading and writing
TOEFL PBT (paper-based test): A minimum score of 583

Yes, you must submit an online application to SMU by 1 April. Applications can be made online at http://admissions.smu.edu.sg/.
I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED BY SMU/SUTD. I AM INTERESTED IN THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME BUT HAVE NOT APPLIED. CAN I STILL APPLY?
You can still apply for the DDP before SUTD’s application closing date. Applications are to be submitted to SUTD.
I AM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT. CAN I APPLY FOR DDP AND AM I ELIGIBLE FOR THE DDP SCHOLARSHIP?
The DDP is currently not open to non-Singapore Citizens applying with international qualifications. If you are a foreigner offering a local qualification, you may apply for the programme. However, note that the DDP scholarship is only awarded to outstanding candidates who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents. International Students who are admitted to DDP and qualify for the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship will have 8 terms of their tuition fees covered, and will have to pay the tuition fees for the remaining 4 terms on their own.
WILL ALL APPLICANTS BE INTERVIEWED?
Only shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by both SMU and SUTD in a joint interview. Interviews will be conducted from January through April each year.
WHERE WILL THE INTERVIEWS BE CONDUCTED?
The interviews will be conducted at the SUTD campus.

ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR THIS DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME?
Qualified SC/SPR students will be eligible for scholarships (full or partial). Please contact SUTD for more details.
I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME, BUT I DO NOT WISH TO TAKE UP THE SCHOLARSHIP. CAN I STILL ENROLL IN THIS PROGRAMME?
You can still enroll in this programme. You will need to inform SUTD of your intention not to take up the scholarship.
I HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED INTO THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME, AND RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP FROM AN EXTERNAL ORGANISATION. CAN I STILL ENROLL IN THIS PROGRAMME?
You can still enroll in this programme. However, you are not allowed to hold more than one scholarship. You will have to decide which scholarship to accept. Please inform SUTD of your final decision.
CAN MALES SERVING SINGAPORE NATIONAL SERVICE APPLY? WILL PLACES BE RESERVED FOR NSMEN FOR POST-NS ADMISSION?
Yes. NSmen can apply and places will be reserved for successful applicants who have accepted the offer.
I INTEND TO SELF-FINANCE MY STUDIES IF I AM ACCEPTED INTO THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME. WHAT WILL BE THE TUITION FEES?

I WAS ACCEPTED INTO THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME BUT I HAVE HAD A CHANGE OF MIND AND WOULD I BE ABLE TO TRANSFER TO SMU?

MY APPEAL FOR TRANSFER TO SMU IS SUCCESSFUL. CAN I STILL KEEP THE SCHOLARSHIP THAT HAS BEEN AWARDED TO ME UNDER THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME? IF NOT, WILL I GET A SCHOLARSHIP FROM SMU?
The DDP scholarship is not transferable. A SMU scholarship will be subject to competition with all SMU scholarship applicants and availability of the scholarships.
WHERE WILL I ATTEND CLASSES?
Dual Degree Programme students will attend classes at both SUTD and SMU. They will be matriculated as full-time students at both universities. Separate university student cards will be issued.
WILL STUDENTS ENJOY ACCESS TO STUDENT FACILITIES AND PARTICIPATE IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (CCAS) IN SUTD AND SMU?
Yes. All Dual Degree Programme students will have full access to all student facilities and be able to participate in student life activities in both SUTD and SMU.
WILL I RECEIVE A JOINT DEGREE AND TRANSCRIPT OR SEPARATE DEGREES AND TRANSCRIPTS FROM SUTD/SMU?
Dual Degree Programme students will receive separate degree scrolls and transcripts from SUTD and SMU.
IS THE DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMME OPEN TO THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING A SECOND DEGREE IN ACCOUNTANCY, ECONOMICS, SOCIAL SCIENCE, LAW AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS OFFERED AT SMU?
There are presently no plans to include Accountancy, Economics, Social Science and Information Systems as a second degree for this Dual Degree Programme. The Law degree in SMU can only be taken as a first degree. Applicants aspiring to do a double degree at SMU School of Law must first be offered admission into the Law programme.

WHAT ARE THE COURSES THAT STUDENTS NEED TO TAKE TO FULFIL THE BACHELOR OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS?
Students are required to take 10 Business Core courses: including Finance, Marketing, Strategy, Business Law, Financial Accounting, Decision Analysis, Management of People at Work and other Business Electives.
