Here are some of the accolades garnered by our students:

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics

SUTD PhD Student Sun Yingxiang’s paper was recently accepted for publication in the prestigious IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics journal, one of the world’s leading scientific journals in electrical and electronic engineering with an impact factor of 7.2 (one of the highest ratings in the domains of electrical and electronics engineering)

His paper proposed a novel indoor sound source localization (SSL) algorithm that has potential for important industry applications such as robot management in Smart Factories, self-steering cameras and intelligent security monitoring. Yingxiang’s research, which is key to overcome existing SSL challenges such as high reverberation and low signal-to-noise ratio, has demonstrated a significant accuracy increase over recently published localization algorithms (60.0% to 81.1%).

SUTD team comprises of Freshmores Brandon Ong, Timothy Liu, Tong Hui Kang, Khong Jia Wei and Fariha Ahsan won the first prize at a hackathon to reduce impact of fake news. The hackathon was jointly organised by SUTD, National University of Singapore, Google and Media Literacy Council.

The James Dyson Award 2017

PERI, an assistive device prototype that improves situational awareness for the deaf and hard of hearing, wins The James Dyson Award 2017 in Singapore. The team comprises of EPD students, Andrew Sng Bing Xiang, Ardy Samsir Kartolo, Liu Gelin, Xing Miao, Daryl Yeo Kai Xun and ISTD students, Pavithren V. S. Pakianathan and Yi Jiayu.

This device is developed from expanding their research idea of sound indicators to alert deaf people for imminent dangers during their Freshmore course, Introduction of Design.

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.

Chevening Award Evening 2017

Pioneer student Joshua Cheong Renjie received the first Singapore Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship in Innovation from British High Commissioner, Scott Wightman at the Chevening Award Evening 2017. He will be pursuing a Master of Philosophy degree in Technology Policy at the Cambridge University.

Chevening is the UK government's global scholarship programme that offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the UK. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding professionals from Singapore and beyond to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.

SUTD debate team beats NUS at The Architecture Society Debates 2017.

The team comprises of Assistant Professor Kenneth Tracy, ASD students Laurenne Soo Kai Leng, and Samantha Lim Shou En, who also clinched the Best Speaker Award.

Tata Consultancy Services Customer Experience Centre(CEC) Design Competition

Two SUTD teams “Ollie & Co” and “Beauty & Beast” emerged as winner and runner-up respectively. Team Ollie & Co, comprised of ASD students, Jonathan Ng Ming-En, Christyasto Priyonggo Pambudi and Clara Hannah Goh, walked away with cash prize of $5,000. Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA)

Project HYPH won the Best Paper Award at the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA). The team consists of Professor Stylianos Dritsas, Xia Tian, Koh Jing Lin, Chen Yutong and Goh Yi Qian.

The HYPH presents a unique way of digital fabrication fusing form-finding and robotics. This installation consists of 280 unique hexagonal tiles made from glass fiber reinforced white concrete, which were cast using molds fabricated with a robot arm and thermoplastic sheets. The design process was inspired by classical experiments producing minimal surfaces and malleable structures via physical simulations. The project is an extension from an elective module in the Master of Architecture programme completed by a group of pioneer students. Watch video.

CAADRIA is one of the four founding organizations of the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC).

Material Research Society (MRS) 2017 Spring Meeting

Ph.D. student, Ihor Radchenko, (2nd from left) who is under research group of Assistant Professor Arief Budiman (EPD), won second prize in Science as Art Competition. Visualization methods provide an important tool in materials science for the analysis and presentation of scientific work. Images can often convey information in a way that tables of data or equations cannot match. Occasionally, scientific images transcend their role as a medium for transmitting information and contain the aesthetic qualities that transform them into objects of beauty and art.
