SUTD 10th Anniversary 10 years of igniting innovation by design 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of SUTD. As part of our year-long celebrations, we sealed the SUTD Time Capsule on 10 July 2019 in the presence of distinguished guests, friends and family. The SUTD Time Capsule will be opened on 10 July 2039. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Established in 2009, SUTD’s mission is to nurture technically-grounded leaders and innovators who will impact the world. Focusing on the holistic value of design and multi-disciplinary approaches to solving real-world challenges, we have set ourselves apart from other universities. We also punch way above our weight for a 10-year-old. Successful working relationships with over 800 companies from diverse sectors and partnering with over 45 educational institutions globally ensure all our students have industry and overseas exposure. Research output has been stellar as well – SUTD is one of the top 5 most influential scientific research institutions in telecommunications in the world. In 2018, we also topped the list of top 10 ‘emerging leaders’ in engineering education in MIT’s Global State of the Art in Engineering Education study. A truly great achievement. For this I’m proud of the dedication and contributions from the entire SUTD community. I also wish to thank all our partners, stakeholders and benefactors for their support as we continue our journey to better the world by design. I believe we will see even greater achievements in the next 10 years. Mr Lee Tzu Yang Chairman, SUTD Board of Trustees SUTD TIME CAPSULE The SUTD Time Capsule preserves and exhibits the university’s most significant innovations and milestones over the past decade, with a design that coordinates form and materials to reflect the ambitious and adventurous spirit of the young university. The form of the capsule represents the cyclical nature of time: a periodic surface peels from the ground in an oscillating motion, holding the collection in a secure yet open space. To create this unique form, digital tools and advanced manufacturing methods were developed and applied. The capsule’s surface consists of 3,582 unique panels, which were computationally designed and 3D printed with biopolymers, producing zero waste. This surface sits over a timber structure, optimised to reduce material consumption and emphasise the feeling of lightness. As SUTD enters its second decade of existence, the SUTD Time Capsule celebrates its past and embraces a bright future ahead.
