The Architect And The Large Firm By Architects Jerry Ong & Lawrence Ler

Abstract

By convention, the architect “emerges” by taking leave of larger practices—by starting a new, small office with a clearly-defined identity. However, many young architects in Singapore are taking an alternate route: that of the emerging architect in the large practice. Is this the rise of a new type of celebrated architect? Is the large firm a viable place to establish a personal identity? What are the advantages created by this type of career path—leveraging, perhaps, on the established industry capabilities of large practices?

For this session, architects Jerry Ong (CPG Corporation) and Lawrence Ler (RSP) will share highlights of their own careers, as well as their thoughts on the contribution of Singapore’s larger offices to the professional and built environment.
