About

Digital Humanities at engineering universities sit within a larger, historical effort to incorporate liberal arts education into the engineering curricula. Such initiatives for liberal education in engineering have historically been informed by the pressing societal concerns of a given time, be it the dominance of the Cold War military-industrial complex, a heightened sense of environmental concerns, or the emergence of vibrant cultural criticism on US college campuses in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, engineering students are expected to be cognizant of the sociopolitical implications of their work and to practice accountability in light of the growing public awareness of algorithmic biases, weaponization of Artificial Intelligence, and extractive data collection practices, but are rarely taught how to go about becoming humanistic data scientists. This talk features the “Introduction to Digital Humanities” course taught at Singapore University of Technology and Design where engineering students are invited to experiment with critical and creative data literacy rooted in the humanities praxis.

Sincerely,
Setsuko on behalf of the DH Asia Webinar Planning Team
