Biography
Courtney Fu is lecturer in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Cluster. She obtained her MA in East Asian Studies from the New York University, and dual-title Ph.D in History and Asian Studies from the Pennsylvania State University where she focused on Chinese material culture and intellectual history. As a fashion studies scholar and historian, her work situates at the intersection of decolonial fashion discourse, Asian sartorial traditions, dress politics, and identity studies. She publishes in both sinology and fashion studies journals and was the Co-PI for a project funded by the Singapore National Heritage Board (NHB) on (re)constructing the nation’s fashion heritage. Her current research explores representations in digital fashion and seeks to reconceptualize sustainable fashion through the lens of heritage fashion. She is also working on a book manuscript documenting and theorising Nanyang fashion. Before joining SUTD, Courtney held postdoctoral teaching and research positions at the Pennsylvania State University and Asia Research Institute, NUS. She has taught courses on comparative fashion and women’s studies in the Department of Chinese Studies, NUS, Cultural and Contextual Studies of Fashion at LASALLE, College of the Arts, and supervised thesis writing in the School of Fashion.
