Programme Outline

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to / can expect to:

  • Understand the principles and concepts of circular economy and how to apply them to design and operations to reduce waste and optimise resource use
  • Develop effective supply chain management strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of products and services throughout their lifecycle, from sourcing to end-of-life
  • Implement carbon management strategies and energy performance and efficiency measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy and resource efficiency in buildings, infrastructure, and operations

 

Day 1
  • Introduction to circularity and circular economy
  • Types of waste streams and challenges in managing them
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • In-class Assignment 1: Performing an LCA for a selected value chain in your organisation
  • Carbon footprinting methodologies
  • Scope 1, 2, & 3 reporting (GHG Protocol)
  • Scope 4 emissions: should you report them?

 

Day 2
  • Four broad supply chain management strategies: legal, ethical, responsible, and sustainable
  • Responsible sourcing and procurement
  • Supply chain transparency and traceability
  • Exercise: Designing a supplier questionnaire for your organisation
  • Supplier management and performance monitoring
  • Supplier capacity-building
  • Downstream client management for supplier organisations

 

Day 3
  • Energy performance and efficiency
  • Efficient energy purchasing and on-site generation
  • Smart systems for energy management
  • In-class Assignment 2: Identifying the top cost-saving energy efficiency opportunities for your organisation
  • Sourcing for renewables
  • Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)
  • Team Project briefing and preliminary planning

 

Day 4
  • Is decarbonisation possible without carbon removal?
  • Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS)
  • Nature-based approaches for carbon removal
  • Exercise: Building a business case for a selected CCUS/nature-based solution for your organisation
  • Carbon pricing and taxes
  • Carbon offsets and voluntary credits
  • Mandatory carbon cap-and-trade systems

 

Day 5
  • Team Project: Re-imagining a low-carbon value chain for your organisation

Subject Credits
Upon completion and satisfying the requirements of passing this course, learners will be awarded 12 subject credits.
