Programme Outline

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners can expect to:

  • Apply social business models to create innovative and sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges
  • Develop and implement co-creation methodologies for inclusive innovation that engage diverse stakeholders in the design process
  • Create effective green marketing strategies that communicate the sustainability benefits of innovative products and services to customers and stakeholders

 

Day 1
  • Innovating as a system: a necessary challenge
  • Building a theory of change
  • Causal loop diagram analysis
  • In-class Assignment 2: Mapping and adapting your organisation’s theory of change
  • Identifying shared value
  • Barriers and resistant forces to system innovation
  • Ecosystem strategies

 

Day 2
  • Social business models: market-based vs collaboration-based approaches
  • Fair trade, benefit corporations, and social enterprises
  • Circular economy & the ReSOLVE framework
  • In-class Assignment 1: Applying the ReSOLVE framework to your organisation
  • Public-private partnership models
  • Community-based models
  • Balancing business innovation with technological innovation

 

Day 3
  • Using co-creation to ensure inclusive innovation
  • Stakeholder capitalism
  • Participative decision-making
  • Exercise: Identifying stakeholders to involve in your organisation’s decisions
  • Asset-based community development (ABCD)
  • Living labs and co-labs
  • Scaling co-creation efforts

 

Day 4
  • Introduction to green marketing
  • Consumer behaviour factor model
  • Aligning product development with green marketing objectives
  • Exercise: Applying the consumer behaviour factor model to your organisation
  • Drawing the line between green marketing and greenwashing
  • Green branding, eco-labelling and complying with green marketing regulations
  • Team Project briefing and preliminary planning

 

 

Day 5
  • Team Project: Developing a business plan for a sustainable innovation

Subject Credits

Upon completion and satisfying the requirements of passing this course, learners will be awarded 12 subject credits.
