Professor Chong Tow Chong

Professor Chong Tow Chong is a University Professor and Director of Temasek Laboratories under SUTD.
 
Prior to this, he was the President of SUTD from April 2018 to 31 July 2024. He was also SUTD’s founding Provost from 2010 to 2018, where he played a crucial role in steering the strategic development and operationalisation of the University. As President, he provided leadership and guidance for the next phase of SUTD’s growth, ensuring continuity in the pursuit of its vision, mission, and strategic goals.
 
Before joining SUTD, Prof Chong was the Executive Director of A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council and the Data Storage Institute for 15 years. He also had a distinguished 30-year academic career at NUS as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
 
Prof Chong has authored and co-authored over 400 publications in international refereed journals, presented more than 35 invited talks, and registered 25 patents. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the President’s Science and Technology Medal, the Public Administration Medal (Gold and Silver), the IES/IEEE Joint Medal of Excellence Award, the ASME ISPS Division Leadership in Research and Development Award, and the Teaching Excellence Award from NUS. Prof Chong is also Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, the Institution of Engineers Singapore and the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology.
 
He holds a BEng from Tokyo Institute of Technology, an MEng from NUS, and a ScD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in Electrical Engineering.
