Successful EDB-IPP trainee will be a full-time salaried employee of the interested Company while pursuing full-time Master of Engineering (MEng), PhD or Engineering Doctorate (EngD) studies at SUTD.
Trainees are expected to spend at least 50% of their time on an identified company research project (supervised by one academic faculty from SUTD and one qualified company staff) at SUTD and the Company’s facility.
EDB-IPP Trainee Eligibility
- Be Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Be eligible for full-time MEng/PhD/EngD studies
- Be employees (permanent or contract) of the Company receiving the grant
- Be earning a basic monthly salary of at least S$4,500
- Shall not be receiving concurrent funding under any EDB grant schemes, or, regardless of the awarding body, any bursaries or scholarships
Sponsorship by EDB and Company
- Total SUTD’s MEng, PhD or EngD Programme tuition fees
- Financial reimbursement of IPP trainee’s monthly basic salary (capped at S$4,000)
- Co-sharing of research grants to SUTD (50%, capped at S$25,000 per Doctoral Student / S$12,500 per MEng student)
- Sponsorship period up to two years for MEng and four years for PhD/EngD studies

Interested Companies will jointly scope research projects (Company-driven) with identified SUTD faculty before putting in an IPP application for EDB’s approval.
Eligibility as an IPP Partner
- Registered and operating Companies in Singapore
- Have the financial ability and commitment to supporting IPP trainee for two years or four years leading to the attainment of an MEng, PhD or EngD respectively in SUTD
- Have an established corporate research and development (R&D) lab in Singapore with a sizeable team of researchers
- Qualified Company R&D leaders and have visibility of the R&D roles in which IPP trainees will be deployed upon completing their IPP projects to be supervisors for the IPP trainees
- Reasonable record of research activities/projects
Contractual Agreement & Intellectual Property Arrangements
Companies will work with the Office of Graduate Studies, SUTD, to formulate the Research Collaboration Agreement for each research project (Company-driven) undertaken by the IPP trainee, Company and SUTD.
The agreement will include clauses related to salary, tuition fees, the extent of commitment by all involved parties, conference travel, insurance, publications, consumables, utilisation of equipment and any other indirect costs which may arise during the IPP.
The Company and SUTD will also need to agree on Intellectual Property (IP) arrangements arising from the IPP trainees’ projects and sign off the Research Collaboration Agreement before the trainee’s matriculation.
Support from EDB for Companies (up to 4 years)
- The support period for MEng is up to two years, and PhD/EngD is up to four years
- IPP trainee’s total tuition fees
- IPP trainee’s monthly basic salary (fixed rate at S$3,500)
- Co-sharing of research grants to SUTD (50%, capped at S$25,000 (MEng) and S$50,000 (PhD/EngD) per student, whichever value is lower)
