The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has received an endowed donation of S$400,000 to establish the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) Global Exchange Award. The donation, which is one of SICC’s initiatives in conjunction with its 180th anniversary celebration this year, will receive a matching grant from the Singapore Government. This gift aims to support undergraduate students’ participation in overseas exchange programmes at SUTD’s partner universities.
Each year, up to six full-time undergraduate students will receive the Award, and it is open to Singaporean and Singapore permanent resident students. The award will go towards defraying students' expenses associated with the overseas exchange programmes. The university offers various overseas programmes that span three to sixteen weeks and includes prominent universities like Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, Pohang University of Science and Technology, National Taiwan University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, to name a few.
Mr Victor Mills, Chief Executive of SICC, said: “The SICC Global Exchange Award reflects the Chamber’s continuing, long term commitment to promote international learning experiences for and among students. We hope that our gift will help provide deserving students, particularly those from financially-challenged backgrounds, with the opportunity to expand their horizons beyond Singapore. We hope the students will learn from their experiences abroad and practice that learning when they come home.”
SUTD’s provost, Professor Chong Tow Chong, received the endowed gift in the form of a cheque presented by SICC’s Chairman, Mr Chaly Mah, at the SICC 180th Anniversary gala dinner this evening.
“As SUTD strives to provide a holistic and well-rounded education to nurture technically grounded talents with global perspectives, we aim to give as many students as possible, the opportunity to gain international exposure during their undergraduate studies. Hence, we are grateful to SICC for their generosity, as this award will go towards helping ensure more of our students benefit from such overseas experience with real-world applications and benefits,” said SUTD Provost, Professor Chong Tow Chong.
