SUTD Partners Autodesk to Equip the University with Cutting-Edge AI-Based Design Capabilities

24 Jul 2019

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Autodesk today announced a strategic partnership that will provide the faculty and students with free access to advanced artificial intelligence (AI) based capabilities within Autodesk Fusion 360, an industry-leading design software that redefines the way things are designed and made across both the build and manufacturing industries.

Starting this year, SUTD faculty and staff will receive training and certification on Autodesk Fusion 360, for them to impart the relevant skills and knowledge to their students. SUTD students will also be given the opportunity to apply their competencies during internships at Autodesk and their business partners.

Today, generative design, a technology exclusively available in Autodesk Fusion 360 is being adopted by the largest companies in automotive, aerospace, architecture and construction, industrial machinery and consumer goods. Using AI and the computing power of the cloud, generative design enables students to create thousands of design options by simply defining their design problem through parameters such as materials, manufacturing methods, and cost constraints. The software explores all the possible permutations of a solution, quickly generating design alternatives.

With the addition of this generative design capability, it will position SUTD students at the forefront of design technology and skills on a global level. Starting from their Freshmore (first) year, SUTD students can utilise Autodesk Fusion 360 in various areas of design, including products, systems and architecture design, as part of their curriculum.

“SUTD’s partnership with Autodesk will be pivotal in placing our students at the forefront of engineering and architectural design, preparing them well to be technically-grounded leaders and innovators who can better the world by design. This partnership will benefit faculty, researchers and students, who will have the opportunity to learn and be conversant with generative design technology within Autodesk Fusion 360, on top of SUTD’s current robust suite of design software, gaining further mastery in cutting edge design tools as well as enabling them to have access to the same class of design tools as renowned designers like Philippe Starck.” said Prof Pey Kin Leong, Associate Provost, Undergraduate Studies and SUTD Academy, SUTD.

“Autodesk has always worked closely with SUTD to ensure that all students have access to the same software used by the most prominent designers, architects and engineers in the world. With the increase in population and the need to do more with less – less costs, resources and environmental impact – generative design will no doubt become a transformative technology and a competitive advantage for the future generation. At Autodesk, we are thrilled to provide SUTD students with cutting-edge AI-based design capabilities that will allow them to be relevant in the marketplace and make a positive impact on the world.” said Haresh Khoobchandani, Vice President of Asia Pacific at Autodesk.

About the Singapore University of Technology and Design

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is Singapore’s fourth public university, and one of the first universities in the world to incorporate the art and science of design and technology into a transdisciplinary, human-centric curriculum. SUTD seeks to advance knowledge and nurture technically grounded leaders and innovators to serve societal needs. SUTD also recently topped a list of emerging engineering schools in the world in a study conducted by MIT.

A research-intensive university, SUTD is distinguished by its unique East and West academic programmes which incorporate elements of innovation, entrepreneurship, design thinking and local and international industry collaborations. SUTD’s key focus areas are Healthcare, Cities and Aviation, supported by capabilities in Artificial Intelligence/Data Science and Digital Manufacturing. Multiple post-graduate opportunities are available. In addition, skill-based professional education and training courses are also available at SUTD Academy.
