He will officially join SUTD in February next year. SUTD issued a statement this afternoon (November 5) announcing the new appointment. Professor Phoon Kok Kwang (57 years old) is currently the Senior Vice Provost (Academic Affairs) and a Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The statement pointed out that Prof Phoon has more than 25 years of experience as a world-class researcher, top educator and active senior academic leader. He graduated from NUS and Cornell University in the United States, engaged in related research in the field of geotechnical engineering, and returned to his alma mater in 1995 to teach in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at NUS. He also served as the head of the department from 2013 to 2015. Prof Phoon is also responsible for various university-level committee affairs at NUS, including chairing the Task Force on Continuing and Professional Education in 2015, which led to the establishment of NUS’ School of Continuing and Lifelong Education. He also served as the Chair of the University Promotion and Tenure Committee (UPTC) from 2015 to this year.
