24 Dec 2014 - Ong Shi Ke (EPD) and Poh Wan Han (ISTD) were awarded the recently established MasterCard Scholarship for Women at SUTD. Read more in the MasterCard press release.
This award is awarded to outstanding full-time female undergraduates pursuing third year of studies in AY2015/2016.
Our ESD undergraduate student, Wei Wei received the best student paper award at the recent 1st Asia-Pacific Conference on Complex Systems Design Management. The paper was work that resulted from a UROP project. More details on the award.
Our first ever quiz team, comprised of Agrim Singh and Yadunund Vijay, finished as 2nd runner ups (out of 91 teams comprising 182 students) in the 8th Tata Crucible Campus Quiz held on 31 October 2014. They won $2,000 and host of other prizes.
The competition will be telecast on 28 November 2014, 8 pm (GMT+8) on Channel NewsAsia.
Kelly Kuo Kai Li and Angel Chia Jing Wen were awarded this year's Keppel Award of Excellence.
This award is awarded to the top 2 students who have completed their Freshmore terms. The applicants were nominated based on their academic results and 5th row participation.
Our students won first and third prizes in the year's edition of the IDC RoboCon competition held from 12th to 28th July in Rabat, Morocco.
The Team Thunder Buddies, consisting of 3 ESD students – Ow Yam Huo, Sarah Mao Yu Ling and Yip Jing Xin, emerged to be a finalist in the 2013-2014 Biomimicry Student Design Challenge.
Only 10 finalists were shortlisted from 198 entries from universities around the world. This year, the design challenge focused on transportation solutions and the entry they submitted was "Nature-Inspired Solutions to the Rural Transport Problem". [video submission]
At the StartUp Asia Hackathon 2014 (organized by TechInAsia), two teams, Team QQ (Mendel Oh - 13F01, Le Vu Huy - 13F02) and Team Busby Babes (Agrim Singh - 13F02 and Parag Bhatnagar - Yale-NUS) were two out of the 14 finalist teams. [more details about the event]
Team QQ, who created a hardware solution based on the Raspberry Pi for independent navigation and remote assistance for the visually challenged, nabbed the top prize for this challenge, winning a S$500 for the team.
The Busby Babes created a web app that allows Manchester United fans in Southeast Asia to have a virtual pub match experience and an extended personal connection to the club. The duo won a trip for two to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United live, with hotel and air tickets included.
The "Balik Kampung" design by Jezamine Chua Zihui, Poh Wan Han and Faizah Ja'affar for the Woodlands Civic Plaza was one of the 11 winning ideas for URA's "PubliCity: Your Ideas for Public Spaces".
PubliCity is an initiative under the Draft Master Plan 2013 to involve the community in celebrating and enlivening public spaces through good design and programming. The "PubliCity: Your Ideas for Public Spaces" competition threw an open invitation to the public to come up with creative visions of public spaces in the city, namely The Lawn @ Marina Bay; spaces along the Singapore River Promenade; the open space at Sultan Gate in Kampong Glam; and the Woodlands Civic Plaza. A team of students which comprised of Agrim Singh (13F02), Le Vu Huy (13F02) and Parag Bhatnagar (Yale-NUS) won an award of S$1,500 at the Enabling Community coLAB 2014 and were finalists at the funding rounds. The team created a Google Glass navigation application to assist the visually challenged.
A team of students, Team Whole One (Poh Wen Ya, Ian Teoh and Zhu Xiaohan) came in First place in the Frost & Sullivan Case Challenge 2014.
The case challenge offered existing undergraduates an opportunity to develop and present solutions for Nairu (a fictional country) to help her develop a nation-wide manpower strategy to ensure that the future demands of the workforce are met, while simultaneously balancing the need for economic growth.
The successful applicants were mentored by Frost & Sullivan consultants, and a total of five finalist teams were selected for the final round. Team Whole One and the other 4 finalist teams presented their proposals to an esteemed panel of judges at the finals, and emerged as the Top Finalist team. They won a cash prize and were offered internship opportunities at Frost & Sullivan.
5 of our students were among the 10 finalists for the IKEA Singapore's Young Designer Award 2014 and Jezamine Chua won the 3rd prize. This first-ever IKEA Singapore's Young Designer Award was launched to seek ideas and solutions in line with the theme, to "Make Space Better" at home. Supported by the DesignSingapore Council, the inaugural design competition saw an overwhelming response of over 70 entries by tertiary students.

A team of students (Jermaine Cheng, Sean Koh, Amanda Mak, Ng Zi Kai and Jessie Tang) has won the award for "Chinatown Heritage Markers Challenge" in the Chinatown coLab 2014.
The team innovated and redesigned the Chinatown Markers because the proliferation of apathy in the youth today has generated a disconnect between history and the present. They also believed that the application of mobile apps currently are way over used and it has generated multiple cases studies to show that mobile apps are not effective in solving social issues.
In lieu of the problem, they have designed a interactive Chinatown marker aimed at breaking down the social apathy that has been built up over the years in the youth. Mimicking human interactions and small talk, the redesigned Chinatown markers take on new personas and relive the past through them. By incorporating the use of the Kinect, QR codes and other sensory devices (i.e,scent emitters,etc), they would be able to recreate the Chinatown using a level of artificial intelligence.
Our Drone Aviators won a total of 10 awards (50 medals + 1 trophy) at the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC) 2014.

Members of the SUTD Weiqi Club (Lau Jia Sheng, Lim Yu Shaun and Zhu Heng Yu) recently participated in the National Youth Weiqi Championships 2014's Open Category and emerged 4th as a team.
Indra Tjitra Salim, Vera Ng Wei Ting, Huang Jiayi, Ow Yam Ow, Chow Jia Hui, Samuel Lee, Ann Wee and Elizabeth Seto Ai Ting took part in the Schneider Electric - Go Green in the City 2014 (global business case challenge) and emerged as semi-finalists.
Wang Lijuan (Sophomore) won the joint 3rd Prize in the International Undergraduate Research Poster Competition 2014 which was organised by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Her submission was shortlisted from 601 submissions and she went to KAUST with 36 other undergraduates for one week in January 2014 to present her poster. Her submission and presentation was on Mobile Imaging System for Early Diagnosis of Skin Cancer.
Agrim Singh (SUTD), Parag (Yale-NUS) and Yiyang (NTU) won the 2nd prize in the Hack & Roll 2014, organised by NUS Hackers. His team made a web app called "Djengue unchained" to predict dengue outbreaks in Singapore. It made use of regression models and government data on temperature, rainfall, public cleanliness and actual dengue outbreaks. [more details about the event]
